This rattan lounge chair, designed by renowned Japanese modernist Isamu Kenmochi, was originally created for the lounge of the prestigious Hotel New Japan, a gathering place for politicians, celebrities, and international visitors. Kenmochi crafted a design that clearly conveys the essence of Japanese aesthetics, combining graceful proportions with exceptional craftsmanship.
Kenmochi was known to sit alongside artisans during production, discussing each detail, resulting in a chair that embodies the subtle beauty of handmade work. The perfect silhouette reflects his deep study of chair design and the exceptional skill of the rattan craftsmen who brought it to life.
By transforming the once purely summer image of rattan furniture, this piece heralded a new era of Japanese modernism. In 1964, it became the first Japanese furniture to be included in the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection, securing its place as a timeless masterpiece.
